ISRAËL EST UN INCROYABLE MELTING-POT DE CULTURES DU MONDE ENTIER. QUEL EST VOTRE MIX D’ORIGINES ?

Ma famille est d’origine tunisienne, de Tunis. La communauté juive était très ancienne en Tunisie, avec plus de 2000 ans d’histoire et un merveilleux patrimoine culturel et religieux. Mes ancêtres étaient des juifs d’Espagne expulsés au XVe siècle par Isabelle la Catholique. Mes parents ont quitté leur pays pour la France en 1967. Je suis née à Paris, dans le quartier du Marais, peu de temps après, en mai 1968, en pleine "révolution"…

VOUS VIVEZ EN ISRAËL DEPUIS 2012. QUELLES ONT ÉTÉ VOS MOTIVATIONS ET LES CHANGEMENTS DANS VOTRE VIE ?

Mon mari, profondément sioniste, a toujours été attiré par Israël, moi aussi. Les attentats de Toulouse en 2012, ont été le déclencheur et ont motivé notre départ pour l’avenir de nos enfants. Pour moi, cette nouvelle vie en Israël a été une nouvelle naissance. Une nouvelle Valérie est née ! je réalise à quel point, je me suis recentrée sur l’essentiel. J’ai appris à mieux me connaitre, à bien choisir ma direction, aussi bien dans ma vie personnelle que professionnelle. Vous savez, il faut être bien réveillé en Israël !

SELON VOUS, C’EST QUOI ETRE ISRAÉLIEN ? COMMENT DÉFINIRIEZ-VOUS L’ESPRIT TYPIQUEMENT ISRAÉLIEN ?

Pour moi, être l’israélien, c’est avoir de l’audace et de l’imagination. C’est faire preuve d’esprit de solidarité et avoir le sens de la transmission à travers des valeurs communes. C’est croire en un pays malgré les différences d’opinions. La conscience patriotique est très forte en Israël. 

VOUS ÊTES JOURNALISTE REPORTER, PRODUCTRICE D’ÉMISSIONS ET ÉCRIVAIN… D’OÙ EST VENUE VOTRE VOCATION ?

Depuis mon plus jeune âge, j’ai toujours été curieuse, je posais des questions en permanence. J’ai toujours rêvé d’être journaliste, pour faire mes propres enquêtes, avec l’envie de transmettre et de dire ma vérité. J’ai passé mon Bac à Paris et un BTS de communication, puis je suis partie aux États-Unis où j’ai obtenu mon diplôme de journalisme à l’Université de Dallas. Un stage à CBS à New York, m’a confortée dans l’idée que le journalisme à la télévision était vraiment fait pour moi. Je suis rentrée en France après six ans de vie américaine, pour être aux côtés de ma famille et y construire ma vie.

RACONTEZ-NOUS LES ÉTAPES DE VOTRE PARCOURS JOURNALISTIQUE EN FRANCE...

J’ai démarré en tant journaliste à Nostalgie La Télé, avec David Pierre-Bloch, une expérience très excitante qui m’a permis d’interviewer les plus grandes stars de la chanson, comme Whitney Houston, Lionel Ritchie, Barry White…

Ensuite, j’ai épousé une carrière dans le Sport, un monde très masculin où j’ai apporté un souffle de nouveauté, avec une approche moins technique et plus humaine. Depuis mon enfance, je suis passionnée de foot. J’ai baigné dans ce milieu, car mon père travaillait au Paris Saint Germain avec Francis Borelli et je l’accompagnais au Parc des Princes tous les week-ends. J’ai d’abord travaillé à Lyon pour TLM (Télé Lyon Métropole), où je présentais une émission d’actualité du Club de foot de l’Olympique Lyonnais, avec des portraits de joueurs, ce qui était totalement original à l’époque. J’ai ensuite intégré le service des sports de I>Télé (Groupe Canal+), où je commentais le Journal des Sports en direct. 

Puis, j’ai rejoint France Télévisions, pour l’émission Foot 3 sur France 3 et la rubrique football de Stade 2 sur France 2.

Le tennis est mon autre grande passion. J'ai animé « La Terrasse de Roland Garros » pour France 2. J’ai adoré l’ambiance et interviewer les grands champions. Il y a eu aussi les Jeux Olympiques à Athènes.

Après, j’ai été Directrice de la Communication de « l’Union des Clubs professionnels de football », un poste difficile, mais très enrichissant dans les coulisses des clubs.

Et pour ma dernière expérience en France, j’ai participé à la création de la chaine MCE, chaine d’information destinée aux étudiants après le Bac, avec deux émissions, « Wanted » et « On vous dit tout ».

VOUS FAITES PARTIE DES PIONNIERS DE LA CHAINE DE TÉLÉVISION INTERNATIONALE I24NEWS, LANCÉE EN JUILLET 2013. BASÉE À JAFFA, EN ISRAËL. EN QUOI CETTE CHAINE EST-ELLE SINGULIÈRE ET INNOVANTE ?

Oui, peu après mon installation en Israël, enceinte de mon dernier fils, j’ai été appelée par Frank Melloul, le Président de I24News, qui m’a embauchée 3 mois avant le lancement.

I24News est une chaine d’information absolument unique, car elle est diffusée en français, en anglais et en arabe, avec des studios en France, en Israël, aux États-Unis, à Dubaï et depuis peu au Maroc. Trente-cinq nationalités y travaillent. C’est un bel exemple de coexistence dans ce Moyen Orient si complexe. La chaine est un lieu de débat et de dialogue entre juifs, musulmans et chrétiens. La liberté d’expression y est totale. Je n’ai jamais subi de censure. Ça, ça n’a pas de prix !

PARLEZ-NOUS DE VOTRE PARCOURS DE JOURNALISTE À I24NEWS ET DE VOS ACTIVITÉS D’AUJOURD’HUI...

J’ai démarré à I24News par la présentation du Sport dans le journal de Jean-Charles Banoun, puis j’ai animé « le Morning », 2 heures de direct le matin et ensuite, un magazine Société. Depuis 2017, je suis productrice et rédactrice en Chef de l’émission « Histoires et Découvertes » consacrée à des lieux et à des figures emblématiques. Je suis passionnée d’Histoire.

J’explore le patrimoine extraordinaire d’Israël et alentours, le berceau de la civilisation et des religions, à travers la culture, l’art et l’archéologie : Shivta, cité nabatéenne, le Mont Thabor, haut-lieu sacré des chrétiens et des juifs, Qumran où ont été découverts les manuscrits de la Mer morte, la Cité de David à Jérusalem, Saint Jean d’Acre, la cité des Croisés, Capharnaüm, Nazareth, au coeur de la vie de Jésus, le cratère Ramon, le désert du Wadi Rum sur les traces de Lawrence d’Arabie, Petra, véritable miracle géologique et tant d’autres... Ces sites racontent l’Histoire du Monde !

Et puis, il y a les personnages, qui ont marqué l’histoire, que je fais découvrir, en m’appuyant le plus souvent sur des entretiens avec leurs proches. C'est une façon originale de les faire revivre et de mieux comprendre leur personnalité : Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Golda Meir, Anouar el-Sadate, Menahem Begin, Eli Cohen, Alfred Dreyfus, Karl Marx, Adolf Eichmann… 

Et aussi des stars, des grands écrivains : Marylin Monroe, Yves Saint Laurent, Paul Newman, Joséphine Baker, Proust, Romain Gary, Nietzsche… Une collection fabuleuse de reportages sur des femmes et des hommes passionnants !

VOUS AVEZ PUBLIÉ DEUX LIVRES, « DESTINS DE FEMMES » ET « ELI COHEN, LE HÉROS DU MOSSAD ». QUELLE A ÉTÉ LEUR INSPIRATION ET EN QUOI LEUR APPROCHE ÉDITORIALE EST-ELLE ORIGINALE ? 

Destins de Femmes, ce sont des portraits de femmes aux 4 coins du monde (Liban, Israël, France, Italie, Allemagne, Inde, Chine, Japon, États-Unis…), dix-sept voix de femmes, issues de manuscrits, sur plusieurs années, que j’avais conservés. À travers leurs histoires, leurs combats, j’ai voulu interroger la place des femmes dans la société et démontrer à quel point, la problématique des femmes est universelle. En 2021, j’ai été très honorée d’obtenir le Prix Edgar Faure pour "Destins de femmes", un Prix qui récompense le meilleur ouvrage politique de l’année.

« Eli Cohen, le héros du Mossad », je l’ai co-écrit avec Sophie Cohen Ben-Dor, la fille aînée de Eli Cohen, que j’avais interviewée pour ma première émission de Histoires et Découvertes. Une profonde amitié est née entre nous. L’histoire de Eli Cohen m’a toujours fascinée. Cet homme était un génie ! il a réussi à infiltrer le pouvoir syrien au plus haut niveau et ses renseignements considérables fournis à Israël ont joué un rôle majeur dans la victoire sur la Syrie pendant la guerre des Six jours de 1967. Nous avons mis des années à réaliser ce livre. Nous avons voulu rétablir la vérité sur ce héros national à la fin tragique, loin de la légende manipulée et romancée, façon 007, notamment dans la série « The Spy », diffusée sur Netflix. Ce livre témoignage est absolument inédit, car nous y révélons des faits, des aspects de sa personnalité hors du commun et des documents exclusifs, déclassifiés par le Mossad, jusqu’alors inconnus du grand public.

AVEZ-VOUS RÉALISE VOS RÊVES ?

Je suis heureuse du chemin parcouru et de ma vie en Israël. Je m’y sens vraiment bien. Les débuts n’ont pas été faciles. J’ai encore des rêves plein la tête… chaque jour !

QUEL EST VOTRE BEST OF ISRAËL ? ET POURQUOI ?

o Votre lieu favori

Tel-Aviv est la ville qui me fait vibrer et me procure du bien-être. C’est la ville qui ne dort jamais. Et j’aime son côté européen.

o Votre hôtel préféré

The Norman, un hôtel de luxe discret et très classe. J’aime sa terrasse, sa piscine sur le toit et sa vue panoramique sur la ville, son quartier résidentiel verdoyant. J’adore y faire mes rendez-vous.

o Votre restaurant préféré

Je suis fan de gastronomie française, mais il faut reconnaitre que la créativité culinaire à Tel-Aviv est vraiment incroyable. J’aime beaucoup le restaurant Malka d’Eyal Shani dans l’hôtel Debrah Brown pour ses plats délicieux. Et aussi le restaurant asiatique Topolopombo, au très beau cadre, raffiné et super créatif.  

o Votre plat israélien favori

J’adore la Shakshuka. Elle se décline en plusieurs versions, mais j’ai une préférence pour la classique, simple et goûteuse : tomates, poivrons, oignons, ail, épices, huile d’olive et œuf poché. Un vrai régal !

o Votre musée top niveau

Nous avons énormément de musées en Israël. Le Musée d’Israël à Jérusalem est absolument unique, bien sûr, mais mon coup de cœur va au Musée d’Art de Tel-Aviv pour ses expos incroyables, comme celle de l’artiste japonaise Kusama.

o Votre marque de mode préférée

Il y a tant de créateurs en Israël ! J’adore Alon Livne, un designer de mode, hyper talentueux. Ses créations aux formes sculpturales sont spectaculaires. Il a un succès fou à la Fashion Week. Il a conquis de nombreuses célébrités et influenceuses. Un grand artiste !

ISRAEL IS AN INCREDIBLE MELTING POT OF CULTURES FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. WHAT IS THE MIX OF YOUR ORIGINS?

My family has Tunisian origins and comes from Tunis. The Jewish community was very old in Tunisia, with more than 2000 years of history and a wonderful cultural and religious heritage. My ancestors were Jews from Spain expelled in the 15th century by Isabella the Catholic. My parents left their country for France in 1967. I was born in Paris, in the Marais district, shortly afterwards, in May 1968, in the midst of the “revolution”…

YOU HAVE BEEN LIVING IN ISRAEL SINCE 2012. WHAT WERE YOUR MOTIVATIONS AND THE CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE?

My husband, very Zionist, has always been attracted by Israel, me too. The terrorist attacks in Toulouse in 2012 were the trigger and motivated our departure for the future of our children. For me, this new life in Israel was a new birth. Yes, a new Valérie was born. I realized how much I had refocused myself on what is essential. I learned to know myself better, to choose my direction, both in my personal and professional life. You know, you have to be wide awake in Israel !

ACCORDING TO YOU, WHAT IS IT TO BE ISRAELI? HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE TYPICALLY ISRAELI SPIRIT?

For me, being Israeli means having audacity and imagination. It means having a spirit of solidarity and a sense of transmission through common values. It is believing in a country despite the differences of opinion. Patriotic consciousness is very strong in Israel.

YOU ARE A JOURNALIST REPORTER, A PROGRAM PRODUCER AND A WRITER… WHERE DID YOUR VOCATION COME FROM?

Since my youth, I have always been curious, I asked questions constantly. I have always dreamed of being a journalist, to do my own investigations, with the desire to transmit and to tell my truth. I got my baccalaureate in Paris and a BTS in communication, then I left for the United States where I got my degree in journalism at the University of Dallas. A training course at CBS in New York reinforced my idea that television journalism was really made for me. I returned to France after six years of American life, to be with my family and to build my life there.

TELL US ABOUT THE STAGES OF YOUR JOURNALISTIC CAREER IN FRANCE...

I started as a journalist at Nostalgie La Télé, with David Pierre-Bloch, a very exciting experience that allowed me to interview the greatest star singers, such as Whitney Houston, Lionel Ritchie, Barry White…

Then, I made a career in Sport, a masculine world where I brought a breath of fresh air, with less technical and more human approach. Since my childhood, I have been passionate about football. I was immersed in this environment, because my father worked at Paris Saint Germain with Francis Borelli and I went to the Parc des Princes with him, every weekend.

I first worked in Lyon for TLM (Télé Lyon Métropole), where I presented a news program of the Olympique Lyonnais football club, with portraits of players, which was totally original at that time.

Then I joined the sports department of I>Télé (Canal+ Group), where I commented the “Journal des Sports” in live.

After, I was hired at France Télévisions, for the program Foot 3 on France 3 and for Stade 2 on France 2.

Tennis is my other great passion. I hosted "La Terrasse de Roland Garros" for France 2. I loved the atmosphere and interviewing the great champions. I was also at the Olympic Games in Athens.

Afterwards, I was Communication Director of "the Union of Professional Football Clubs", a difficult but very rewarding job behind the scenes of the clubs.

And for my last experience in France, I participated in the creation of MCE channel, an information channel for students after the Bac, with two programs, “Wanted” and “On vous dit tout”.

YOU ARE ONE OF THE PIONEERS OF I24NEWS, THE INTERNATIONAL TV CHANNEL LAUNCHED IN JULY 2013. BASED IN JAFFA, ISRAEL. HOW IS THIS CHANNEL SINGULAR AND INNOVATIVE?

Yes, shortly after settling in Israel, pregnant with my last son, I was called by Frank Melloul, the President of I24News, who hired me 3 months before the launch.

I24News is a News channel absolutely unique, being broadcast in French, English and Arabic, with studios in France, Israel, the United States, Dubai and recently in Morocco. Thirty-five nationalities work there. It is a nice example of coexistence in this complex Middle East. I24News is a place of debate and dialogue between Jews, Muslims and Christians. There is a complete freedom of expression. I have never been censored. That is priceless !

TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNALIST CAREER AT I24NEWS AND YOUR ACTIVITIES TODAY.

I started at I24News with the presentation of Sport in Jean-Charles Banoun's News Journal, then I hosted "le Morning", 2 hours of live, and a Society magazine. Since 2017, I have been the producer and editor-in-chief of the program “Histoires et Découvertes” devoted to emblematic places and figures. I am passionate about history. “Histoires et Découvertes” is a marathon of shootings, intense adventures and exceptional human encounters. I explore the extraordinary heritage of Israel and its surroundings, the cradle of civilization and religions, through culture, art and archeology : Shivta, the Nabataean city, The Mount Tabor, sacred place of Christians and Jews, Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, the City of David in Jerusalem, Saint John of Acre, the city of the Crusaders, the Ramon Crater, Capernaum, Nazareth, the heart of the life of Jesus, the Wadi Rum desert in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia, Petra, a real geological miracle and so many other sites… These sites tell the story of the world !

YOU HAVE PUBLISHED TWO BOOKS, “DESTINS DE FEMMES” AND “ELI COHEN, LE HÉROS DU MOSSAD”. WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION AND HOW IS THEIR EDITORIAL APPROACH ORIGINAL?

“Destins de femmes”, consists of portraits of women from all over the world (Lebanon, Israel, France, Italy, Germany, India, China, Japan, United States…), seventeen voices of women, taken from manuscripts, on several years, which I had kept. Through their stories, their struggles, I wanted to question the place of women in society and demonstrate how the issue of women is universal. In 2021, I was very honored to win the Edgar Faure Prize for "Destins de femmes", a Prize which rewards the best political work of the year.

Regarding "Eli Cohen, le héros du Mossad", I wrote it with Sophie Cohen Ben-Dor, the eldest daughter of Eli Cohen, whom I had interviewed for my first program of “Histoires et Découvertes”. A deep friendship was born between us. I have always been fascinated by the story of Eli Cohen. This man was a genius, the greatest secret agent in the world ! he succeeded in infiltrating Syrian power at the highest level and his considerable intelligence provided to Israel played a major role in the victory over Syria in the Six Day War of 1967. It took us years to make this book. We wanted to rehabilitate the truth about this national hero, whose end was tragic, far from the manipulated and romanticized legend, 007 style, especially in the series "The Spy", broadcast on Netflix. This testimony book is absolutely unique, because we reveal facts, aspects of his extraordinary personality and exclusive documents, declassified by the Mossad, until now unknown to the general public.

HAVE YOU FULFILLED YOUR DREAMS?

I am happy with my journey and my life in Israel. I feel really good here. The beginnings were not easy. I still have dreams in my head... every day!

WHAT IS YOUR BEST OF ISRAEL? AND WHY ?

o Your favorite place

Tel-Aviv is the city that makes me vibrate and brings me well-being. This is the city that never sleeps. And I like its European spirit.

o Your favorite hotel

The Norman, a discreet and very classy luxury hotel. I like its terrace, swimming pool on the rooftop, panoramic view of the city and its green residential area. I love organizing my meetings there.

o Your favorite restaurant

I am addicted to French gastronomy, but I agree that the culinary creativity in Tel Aviv is truly incredible. I really like Eyal Shani's restaurant, Malka in the Debrah Brown Hotel for its delicious dishes. And also the Asian restaurant Topolopombo, with a very beautiful setting, refined and super creative.

o Your favorite Israeli dish

I love Shakshuka. It comes in several versions, but I have a preference for the classic, simple and tasty : tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, spices, olive oil and poached egg. A real treat !

o Your museum or top art venue

We have a lot of museums in Israel. The Israel Museum in Jerusalem is absolutely unique, of course, but my favorite is the Tel Aviv Museum of Art for its incredible exhibits, such as the exhibit by the Japanese artist Kusama.

o Your favorite fashion brand

There are so many creators in Israel ! I love Alon Livne, a super talented fashion designer. His creations with sculptural forms are spectacular. He has crazy success at the Fashion Week. He has conquered many celebrities and influencers. A great artist !
